Brief History of the Color Gray

Gray has been around for 17,000 years. The caves of Lascaux are home to a series of cave paintings that attest to the use of gray pigments. These pigments are a type of manganese oxide that includes the dark steel-gray to black manganite and jet-black groutite.

Grey was first used as a color name in English in 800 CE.

The word has two spellings because American and British spelling evolved differently due to cultural and linguistic influences.

The term “gray” is used in the United States, while “grey” is used in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The color, however, remains the same regardless of how it is spelled.

The word “gray” is derived from the Old English word “grai” and is closely related to the Old German word “grau,” which means “ashen.”

Gray has been associated with mystery, elegance, and refinement throughout history.

Grey was used in ancient Greece and Rome marble carvings to create the illusion of depth and contrast.

As a symbol of sobriety and modesty, monks frequently wore grey garments during the Middle Ages.

Furthermore, gray was also used in art to create lightness and depth, particularly during the Italian Renaissance.

Gray became popular in art in the 17th century, particularly in Dutch and Flemish paintings. Dark colors were frequently dominant in these paintings, and gray was used to subtly contrast different tones.

Since the 18th century, grey has been adored by the French, especially the silvery shades. They were associated with elegance.
