Brief History of Brown
In art, brown dates back to prehistoric times. The brown pigment has been used by humans since the dawn of time.
Some paintings were discovered to be painted with umber – a natural clay pigment containing iron and manganese oxides. These are thought to date back to 40,000 BC.
Brown animal paintings dating back 17,300 years have also been discovered on the walls of the Lascaux cave.
Brown was first mentioned in Old English in the year 1000 under the name ‘brún.’ This term referred to any dusky or dark color. It was used to create a warm, earthy tone.
In ancient Egypt, whose history began in 3100 BC, the umber pigment was discovered on tomb paintings, especially women’s skin was drawn in brown.
The ancient Greeks and Romans used cuttlefish ink to produce reddish-brown ink, also known as sepia.
Furthermore, ancient Rome associated brown clothing with barbarians and the poor. The poor were referred to as “pulatti,” which means “those dressed in brown” in Italian. Perhaps because this pigment was so easy to come by.
Franciscan monks also wore Brown in the Middle Ages as a sign of poverty and humility. In addition, each social class was assigned a color based on their social status, with brown being assigned to the poor due to its earthy and dirty tones.
More precisely, they were wearing russets. Russet was a coarse homemade wool cloth that was hand dyed with woad, a gum plant pigment. Poor Englishmen were forced to wear russets in 1363.
During the Renaissance, artists used four distinct browns:
- raw umber, a dark brown clay extracted from the Umbria region of Italy
- raw sienna, a reddish-brown earth mined near Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy
- burnt umber, produced by heating the Umbrian clay to a dark reddish-brown color.
Brown began to gain popularity in the 17th century with the artworks of Caravaggio and Rembrandt Van Rijn, giving the canvas a sense of realism.
However, the French Impressionists detested brown, preferring pure colors.
Today, companies often use brown on labels to advertise natural, organic products. What’s more, it offers warmth and comfort in any home.
